Did you know that salt helped shape life on Pag Island for centuries? The island is often recognised for its rocky, almost lunar landscape, but some of Pag’s oldest stories are connected to something people use almost every day, salt.
Pag’s “White Gold”
Known as Pag’s “white gold”, salt was always needed in cooking and food conservation and was a symbol of wealth, a payment tool, and an important part of the economy. Historical records mention salt production on Pag as early as the 10th century, making the salt pans one of the oldest traditions on the Adriatic coast and something that has been part of the island’s identity for centuries.

Natural Conditions for Salt Production
With its strong winds, shallow sea, and sunny climate, Pag naturally developed ideal conditions for salt production. Salt was once produced naturally through the evaporation of seawater, using only the sun and wind. Even today, despite modernisation and continued investment in production, those same natural conditions remain the foundation of salt production on Pag, continuing one of the island’s oldest traditions.

Keeping the Salt Tradition Alive
Today, Solana Pag also keeps this tradition alive through different educational activities, workshops and events, especially during the “Month of Pag Salt” festival, locally known as “Misec paške soli”, held every September. From early morning salt harvesting in the fields, birdwatching along the salt pans and local product tastings, to workshops, exhibitions and concerts, visitors can experience a completely different side of Pag connected to its salt tradition and island life.

Pag Through Local Flavours
For us, places like Solana Pag are always a reminder that some of the most basic things, like Pag salt, often carry the greatest stories and legacies. Besides salt, Pag is also recognised for Pag cheese, Pag lamb, Pag sage honey and Pag wine, all made special and influenced by the island’s conditions, strong winds and salty air coating the island’s vegetation. Together, these natural conditions create flavours deeply connected to Pag itself and its salt, filling our palates with rich local tastes.
